Adventure
To bring Adventure to New Jersey’s youth that changes the way they live!In the Summer of 2016 I completed an internship with the Marine Science Camps of New Jersey, I worked with a different group of children each week, teaching them about Marine Science and Ocean Conservation. The sessions took place weekly outdoors. It was always a great deal of fun exposing the youth to the idea that learning and classrooms can take place in different contexts, and not just in a building.
I also met with the curriculum coordinator to design and implement my own lesson into the curriculum. The topic of my lesson was Oxybenzone, which is a popular chemical component in many suncreens, and how it is contributing to the destruction of our coral reefs. This process is known as coral reef bleaching. I would frequently have the children come back the next day after my lesson and tell me that they told their families about my lesson. They would then tell me that their families would stop using sunscreen with Oxybenzone. It felt so awesome to know I was making a difference!
